I've just come back from the Franschhoek Literary Festival which is a real highlight of the year for me. Cold weather, books, really interesting people (13 000) of them in fact and beautiful Franschhoek is a winning combination. You meet people you’d never normally meet- which is what great networking is all about.
Best article I've read
My friends and family tell me I'm becoming a sleep evangelist! Do you know that we need 7-8 hours of sleep a night and less than 30% of us are getting it. It’s the first thing we compromise on when we’re busy. Sleep is a game changer! We spend more money on our holidays and our hair than we do on our beds. Spend the money and invest in the best bed possible- that’s where we refuel every night-don’t compromise on such an important item!
Over the holidays I've been doing a lot of reading. My favourite book of the year so far is:The Invention of Wings by Sue Monk-Kydd
She wrote "The Secret Life of Bees" and this new book is better. Set in the slavery era of the USA- it’s a gripping tale of a girl slave called “Handful”, who is exactly as her name describes. It’s beautifully written and I couldn't put it down.
One plus One by Jojo Moyes
“Me Before You” by the same author is still one of the biggest tear-jerker's I've ever read. I love the way Moyes writes- her characters are real and down to earth. It’s easy and holidayish- like a comfortable pair of slippers.
Thrive by Arian Huffington
I have a great interest in Mindfulness and Energy Management and this book addresses both these subjects brilliantly. Ariana Huffington, the founder of the Huffington Post has incredible insights into performance, stress, recovery and new ways of working. Virtually every page of my copy is turned down, which is always a great sign of a treasured read.
There’s been a lot of eating and drinking over the holidays:
Cafe Del Sol, Olivedale, JHB- (011) 704-6493
My favourite restaurant in JHB- the Calamari Limnocello is stuff legends are made of. You have to book weeks ahead for the evenings- lunchtime is more manageable. Consistent, good service- just amazing!
Delaire Wine farm in CT- (021) 885-8160
I've never seen views like this in my life- tourists are gob-smacked and you'll be too. Between Stellenbosch and CT- the food is OK, but you don't go for the food. You may just sit there and stare into the mountains!
Ataraxia Sauvignon Blanc-www.ataraxiawines.co.za
I know this wine farm sounds like Rattex, but their Sauvignon Blanc is my new favourite thing.
